350QX
 PostedMay 4, 2014
This is the easiest quad to fly. I like the different modes of operation and I have alot of fun flying it (my neighbors like it to). I do think it is a tad bit over priced, but if you can get one I would. I have had the 350QX for several months now and it still flys like it just came out of the box. Good work Horizon........

Great fun, but Gopro problems are disappointing.
 PostedApril 14, 2014
I bought this quad copter for the combination of fun and Go pro compatibility. The copter is loads of fun, but the documented Wi-Fi problems are really disappointing. I am waiting for the firmware update to Version 2.0. I think Horizon should provide the update hardware to owners free of charge. No info has been provided on the availability of the copper sheets needed to shield the camera that I assume are included with the new copter V.2.0. The new version should function better.

Great intro into quads
 PostedMarch 19, 2014
This is a great choice if it's your 1st quad or even if your an experienced multi-rotor pilot you'll still find this one fun and exciting. Being a fixed wing pilot, I wanted to try something else. This has been a great quad for me. I now have a GoPro and FPV setup for it.
Originally I thought I would need something larger but this bird has plenty of power to meet my needs.
It's pretty durable also. Having tumbled it on the ground many times doing low passes, (a little too low), the most damage I have done is break a prop. I have also used this quad to teach others how to fly. It's a great teaching\learning tool!

Needs a few mods but otherwise a decent quad.
 PostedFebruary 23, 2014
First off, go online and do a search of mods and tricks to get the thing working properly, especially with a gopro hung on it. With a couple of minutes of trimming on the camera mount, the GP2 will clamp in securely. Secondly, add some aluminum foil tape to the underside of the nose, above the camera to help block the interference the camera puts off. Some guys cram it inside but I smoothly applied it to the outside and now the GPS locks up every time and works perfectly. Next, be sure and inspect your props before you get caught by surprise with an in flight failure! All 8 of mine showed white stress lines so I did a CF conversion to DJI Phantom blades using aftermarket hub adaptors. Whew!
Mind your flight times and stay in close towards the end of your flight....The price is quite stiff compared to DIY quads but you don't have to tune this one and it will do everything you ask of it. Pretty cool little quad camera platform.

Great Quad
 PostedFebruary 22, 2014
This is a great quad. It's well built and a lot of fun to fly. My average flight time has been 6-7 minutes. The leds make it easy to see at night.
The problem is the props, they are not so good. I put on prop adapters and tried two types of carbon fiber props and they were ok.
Then I added a set of Zinger 8x5 wood props. Now it flies great. I could not believe the difference the wood props made and the wood props you can get 1 at a time other then buying a complete set of carbon fiber.
Have fun and enjoy.

The best Quad out for the money!
 PostedFebruary 18, 2014
I bought mine back in Nov. and I love it. I fly this bird any time I get a chance to. I love flying it at night. The only draw back is the gopro hero 3 issue, but there is a quick and easy fix for that. I posted what I did to be able to use my hero 3 with it on RCGroup website. I'll post it here too. It won't cost anything cuz more than likely u have this at home which is aluminum foil. Here's what I posted:
I just bought a gopro hero 3 white. I seach on couple of sites to find ways to be able use my hero 3 with the blade 350 qx. The best way to go is tin foil. I covered the bottom of the body inside with tin foil from the middle to the front of the body. I try flying outside and it took a little bit pass the second beep to get gps lock. Which is fine for some people, but not me. So I proceeded to wrap the gopro with tin foil too with the template. Went back outside and tried it again. This time the gps lock right after the 1st beep, which is the normal time it takes without gopro. So I was extremely happy. I will post picz of it later. Happy Flying ya'll!

Don't trust it
 PostedFebruary 14, 2014
Had it since End of December and had one gopro related crash. Fixed it myself and it still was squirrly. Sent it in and it's still unstable. I bought the gopro specifically for this quad and then found out it was'ent compatible. Should really remove the any reference of a gopro camera from your product.

Copter great, get a Mobius HD camera
 PostedFebruary 11, 2014
No complaints with the 350 QX, but get yourself a Mobius HD camera.
Much cheaper than a Hero3 camera, and the video is as good as, if not better than, all of the GoPro Hero cameras.

Not GoPro Black Edition Compatible
 PostedJanuary 29, 2014
Don't purchase the 350 QX if you plan to use the GoPro Black Edition on it. The two devices are completely incompatible. Even with WiFi turned completely off, the camera interferes with the 350 QX.
I don't own an old GoPro, so I assume it works fine with those. Horizon Technical supports recommends NOT using the GoPro Black Edition on the quad even though the manual online says it can be used with WiFi off.
Is the Quad fun to fly? Absolutely! Unfortunately, it was purchased for use with the Black Edition GoPro and it doesn't work with it.
Foil does work if you surround the camera to create a RF shield. Smart mode did lock, but I didn't feel comfortable flying it this way.

with the Go-Pro Black3+ you've got a much stronger signal - use copper adhesive tape from Home Depot - that will eliminate all issues - at least it did to mine...

Very Upset
 PostedJanuary 19, 2014
I had my quad copter 2 days. I had about 4 successful runs with it. Then on my last flight GPS mode was activated and I was in safe mode. I put it in Come Home mode, it came towards me for about 3 seconds then went the other direction until it was out of sight. I searched by car and foot for hours and hours on end and never found it! This upsets me greatly! Not only was this an Awesome product, but I spent so much money purchasing it. Obviously there is a GPS malfunction. I have contacted Horizon Hobbies and Hope to hear from them as soon as possible with good news!

Sorry to hear about your loss.
Did you have a GoPro on it? I have a GoPro Black Edition and even though WiFi is turned off, it causes all sorts of interference with my 350 QX. Not compatible at all... When my 350 QX goes crazy, which it does in highly WiFi saturated environment, I switch off Smart Mode and fly home manually.
Perhaps that's why Horizon just came out with the:
350 QX RTF AP Combo with SAFE Technology
The loss also gives me an idea to label my 350 QX with contact information in case it goes crazy.

Great for someone with no heli experience
 PostedJanuary 18, 2014
Got the Blade on Wed, called tech support because my radio is a JR X9503 2.4 gh and the manual does not include programming instructions for it. Kent e-mailed them to me almost before I disconnected the call. Followed them on Thurs am and took it out to the field that pm. It flew right out of the box. The programming was right on.
Kent had told me that no one had documented using a buddy box set up. I have a 2 1/2 yr old grandson. This Sat we hooked up a Spektrum 5e buddy box and it worked. We learned of one glitch with the buddy box, if you come back on the throttle all. the way, it cuts the throttle, and the Blade came straight down from about 25'. We did break one skid which is curing with JB weld, no other damage.

BNF and old dx6i
 PostedJanuary 16, 2014
Been flying mine most days for a week in smart mode. There are two DJI phantoms in the club and the Blade performs as well as them. Plan on hanging a camera and 5.8gh transmitter under it.
Had problems binding it to an old DX6i. Recommended dx6i throttle programing is +10 sub trim. Well, to get my Blade to arm, I duck taped it to the table and varied the throttle sub trim until the blades spun up when slapping the rudder back and forth. Using my DX6i it arms when throttle sub trim is -15 to -18! Ya, I know, but I've dropped my dx6i on it's face a couple of times.
The supplied battery hardly fits, I found some that do, but with any battery I fly it without the battery cover just fine.
The printed manual supplied is outdated and incomplete. Download and print the Blade online manual.

Prop Issue
 PostedJanuary 6, 2014
This quad flies great!!!! No complaints with how it handles. However, it is made from some of the cheapest plastic I have ever seen. If you need to open it to do repairs, have fun unscrewing all of the tiny eye glass screws that hold it together. Once it's open, you will soon realize how thin and cheap the plastic is. It's pretty bad for a device that costs over $400. I expected a higher quality product from Horizon. Also, DON"T TRUST THE B PROPS! They break too!!!! Purchase APC prop adapters and props (espically if you have a camera) if you want something reliable that won't just fall out of the sky.

I must have had 30 flights on mine and I was at the park minding my own business when all of sudden one of the props blew apart and there goes my $400+ drone crashing into the ground. We both saw the blade come apart, so we know it was an in-flight mishap. The blade literally came apart at high speed horizontal flight at about 30 feet. Found the blade where it all came apart and the drone 50 yards away, so there's no way the prop broke on the crash landing.
Now I've got a broken fuselage which are backordered. No one in the San Francisco Bay Area has one. Bummed. The props are definitely made on the cheap and I am definitely interested in an APC alternative.

Excellent Camera Platform for the money!!
 PostedJanuary 3, 2014
I have been interested in shooting more aerial video and pictures with my GoPro Camera . I was hesitant when I first saw this product on the market due to my lack of knowledge on flying anything like this. Finally I made the decision to squeeze the trigger and buy this product. I could not be more pleased!! I found the video instructions on how to set up my transmitter very helpful. I was not able to get my aircraft ready to fly until after dark! My maiden flight was in the dark. The aircraft flew great and the auto return to home worked perfectly. My eleven year old son, who has minimal flight experience, was able to fly this thing with just a few minutes of instruction. I have found that wind just like with any other aircraft does play a role with video stabilization. I have flown in 12-16 mph with no problem! Thanks Blade!!!!!!!!

350 BLOWS AWAY AR Drone 2
 PostedDecember 26, 2013
Wow, this thing is absolute sick amazing. It's a little tricky to start with the safety feature not that well documented, but after we figured that out, the GoPro 3+ went for an amazing ride. The vertical lift speed of the 350 with a GoPro is astounding. It went up hundreds of feet in seconds. It's also very easy to control in stability mode & the return home feature is very useful for high altitude flying.

No GoPro
 PostedDecember 18, 2013
Yes this is a very good product for the money right up to the point where you purchase a GoPro 3+ which the 350QX is not compatible with. Don't take my word for it, even HH Tech Support's answer was "there is no current solution". Basically, if you have your camera in the record mode and turn on the quad, the GPS will not sync. If you sync the GPS first and then put your camera in the record mode, your quad will loose control and crash. I found this out the hard way.
Apparently this seems to be a problem with only the later model GoPros, but be warned it could cost you a lot of money to find out. My gripe is the quad is marketed with the GoPro as one of the advantages when in actuality it's a problem waiting to happen.

If you remove the bottom of the 350 QX and insulate the complete bottom with aluminum or copper tape then the gopro will work fine.
If you do this be sure to cut openings for all of the vent wholes.
There is a video on youtube how to do this.

Is this with the GoPro Wi-Fi turned off or on? There's a service bulletin that says the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi on the GoPro will interfere with the 2.4GHz radio system and that you must turn the GoPro Wi-Fi off.

Awesome Quadcopter
 PostedDecember 15, 2013
This is the first quad that i have ever been able to control and fly, and is awesome as the Apprentice 15e... :-). Even uses the same Transmitter. Most quad's are very flimsey, but this one is made out of durable, hard plastic. On my first attempt i made the mistake of having it in the "Agile mode" and totally did summersalts and crash very hard upside down without doing any damage or even scratching it. I highly recommend it! Just be sure to be in a clear area for the GPS.

Tip: Flying the 350 QX ... indoors
 PostedDecember 12, 2013
If you like to practice your flying indoors and you don't have a lot of room....
Bind the 350 QX with GPS OFF.....
Fly in the Stability or BLUE MODE ( Blue light flashing )
The reason for this is:
#1 - INDOORS GPS SIGNAL can be marginal at best....
#2 - With the GPS LOCK on ...
Transmitter sticks centered will warrant a response from the 350 QX.
( it may respond a few feet in any direction according to the GPS SIGNAL before you have time to catch it.....)
With the GPS OFF ....
No response is warranted from the 350 QX when you Center the right stick...
.. You are in full control !
You can fly it through hallways, in between rooms, around chairs, etc
NO DRIFT!
I do it all the time.!
REMEMBER: Keep the Blue Flashing Light in sight, all the time if you are a beginner....
Right Stick forward .....350 QX forward
Right Stick Right..... 350 QX right
Right stick Left... 350 QX Left
Right stick Back... 350 QX Back
Practice hovering !!!!!
Great place to start ...
Read more of my reviews for great tips on flying the 350QX...

Blade 350 qx
 PostedDecember 4, 2013
Excellent flyer ! Everything works as promised . As an r/c airplane flyer for over 30 years and only flown a small quad 10 or so times , ( quite jittery little things) I have to say , this 350qx is a real sweet heart in the air . I'm not too fond of the smart mode keeping the quad 16 - 20 feet away from me , and I hate the way the sticks work in this mode . It's like backwards to me . Although it might be helpful for new pilots . Good job on this bird E flight !!!!

As you get more experienced with the SAFE mode you will note:
You do not have to stay in the "SAFE CIRCLE".
You can either start or land anywhere you like and create a new SAFE CIRCLE...
(whether you are in it or not..)
(Great for avoiding certain things like cars or towers)
The SAFE is created approx 15 feet behind the copter....
Whether you are in it or NOT!
Red blades are the front... GREY blades are the back....
Many times I fly and change the location of the SAFE Circle
Sometimes 4 or 5 times a flight ....
Simply land shut off the engines and restart...
ANYWHERE!
... be sure you have a GPS Solid light ON.
You have now created a new Safe circle 15 feet behind the QUAD!
PS: you can fly right through a SAFE circle in Stability mode....
Read more of my reviews for great tips on flying the 350QX...
Still the best quad for the buck as of this date: DEC 2013...

OK, could be better
 PostedDecember 1, 2013
The main issue with this quadcopter is that is not working as advertised in SAFE mode. It works OK 90% of time, but I've noticed that sometimes (especially if you rotate it around its axis few times during the flight) it loses orientation, so for example if I pull aileron stick towards me in SAFE mode, instead of flying towards me, it will fly in some different direction (could be any other direction). The problem is that if you then select return to home, quad will land at some seemingly random spot. That may be OK if there are no trees or buildings around, but if there are, quad is likely to crash like it happened to me and couple of others that have same quad.
I don't know if calibration would fix this problem because it works good 90% of time, but to me it looks more like software/firmware issue with SAFE technology..
Another problem is that this quad is made very cheap, from non-standard parts, and spares are priced ridiculously high. More capable APM 2.5 boards run for $80-$90 (anywhere except at 3DR), I guess this one should be less than $50, but it is priced at $229.
I use this quad with DX18, during binding it shows that supports telemetry, but it doesn't transfer any telemetry information to DX18.
Main value with this quad is that there is no build time, just charge the battery, bind it and you are ready in fly. If SAFE mode would work 100% of time as advertised it would be great, but you have to exercise caution knowing that SAFE mode may not save the quad, but crash it instead.

POOR GPS SIGNAL AREA!
The problem is not with the 350 QX....
Understand it the 350 QX loses the GPS Lock ...
it defaults to stability mode ...
You said you were flying in high traffic areas.... High buildings, Trees, ETC.ETC....
This can happen at any time...
Weak GPS Signal area... cloudy day.....ETC.
Any number of things can happen to cause you to lose the GPS lock.... The 350 QX will simply default to stablity mode ( BLUE LIGHT FLASHING)
In Stability MODE the Right Stick is proportional to which way the 350 QX id facing. Remember the Big Light is the Back of the 350 QX.
The First Sign... the GPS lock has been interrupted is the 350 QX appears to be drifting away ( drifting in the direction of the wind )
The second sign of a temporary GPS interruption is the Quad moves in an unexpected direction .....
(It's really not unexpected if you understand... it is really in "Stability mode" without a GPS position hold)
It's not a problem with the 350 QX but a safe guard used to prevent a crash situation....
Problem is .... you need to know the orientation of the 350 QX & how to fly it without Safe MODE....
Like a real Helicopter....
If you hit return to home while the GPS LOCK has been temporarily interrupted ...the 350 QX will attempt land where it is because it has no other choice ....
If while flying the GPS signal is restored .... we are back in buisiness as usual.....
Recomendation.....
Fly in an area you have a good GPS signal....
Practice flying at very low levels in Stability Mode....(Blue Light)
This will "safe guard" you from crashing should a failure to maintain the GPS lock occur during flight..
ANYTIME YOU FLY ...
always be aware of the orientation (Direction of the 350 QX) regardless of what MODE you are in....

You have to remember when starting the motors ....
SAFE mode is created behind the Quadcopter......
If you swap propeller blades ...RED for Black... this could create an issue... and confuse you....the easy way to remember is .... The back of the 350 QX Quad is where the main light is .... The SAFE Zone is created 15 feet behind the LIGHT. of the 350 QX...
... it has nothing to do with where you are standing with the transmitter.....
If you start the motors with the light to the right.....
the centre of the SAFE zone will be 15 feet to your right....
and confuse you, in handling the controls....
ONCE you know EXACTLY where you have created the SAFE CIRCLE, you will be able to hit "RETURN TO HOME" & it will....
NOTE: Bear in mind ..... the Quad will want to climb first to clear any obstacles in it's path.....this requires substantially more POWER from the battery ....if your battery is low it may not be able to maintain the lock on the GPS Circle as well...
DO NOT HIT "RETURN TO HOME"
If your battery is on its last legs. ...
