great value

The Seagull Edge 540 180 is a great value out of the box. Looks Great! Hardware with the kit was average. I use aftermarket hardware and always real hinges for control surfaces. I used a 30 DLE and had to add 2.5 ounces to the nose which is not bad. Flys with forgiving easy landings for slow approach. Great aerobatic performance with no snapping in loops. I always build light in the tail with little epoxy. I dont use metal gear servos in the tail either. ** Also move receiver batteries to the front along side of the fuel tank to shift weight forward. If I purchaced this kit all over again, I might use DLE 50 with a Tri-blade. Summary: If you want a lot of plane for not much more money buy it. This is my 4th Seagull ARF.

For just a little more.

The only thing that this plane is good for is to look at and say “that’s a big plane for little money”. After putting a DLE 30 on the front of this plane, I also had to put a pound and a half of weight hanging off the motor mount just to get the CG. I had to beef up the mounting box to hang the engine on and to support all the extra weight. I was hoping that when I flew this plane that it would be a little nose heavy so I could relieve the plane of a lot of weight, but “Nope” flew ok. Planes are designed to be light and agile not a brick. This is a very cheap airplane in all respects, and after having Hanger 9’s and Aero Works airplanes whose quality is so far above seagull’s I will go the little extra to get a good quality plane that I can enjoy. I have removed everything from this plane and installed into a better plane!

As good as I could buid from a kit

This ARF has a very nice appearance and build quality. The covering arrived absolutely perfect and all the glue joints looked good. Only a few issue on the hardware (wing tube was too long, some minor nuts and washers were junk, the aileron pushrods were too short). The big issue I had was to get it to balance with a Saito 180. Even after mounting the engine 1 cm further out than the plans called for, and placing the battery next to the fuel tank, I had to build and bracket and add 6 oz as far forward as possible. With a heavier DLE30 it proably would have been right on. The plane still flies a bit tail heavy but is not pitchy and is very easy to land slowly with no hint of a tip stall or snap. The fuel tank is very far forward right behind the firewall so I remain a bit concerned about a CG shift, but I have not flown it enough yet to determine if this is an issue. The plane is not particularly fast with the Saito 180 but it has plenty of vertical power.
